Hiking

We hike together with the host on his home trails.

All our guests are invited to enjoy the pristine natural landscapes. During your stay, it's easy to strap on snowshoes and head out to explore the wonderful nature of Ohepalu bog. There you can experience the true beauty of Estonian nature, walking through peaceful and untouched landscapes. Ohepalu bog offers a unique opportunity to see rare plant and animal species, enjoy tranquility and peace, and feel a deep connection with nature.

Golden Eagle Nest Camera LIVE
The Golden Eagle nest camera is located in Northern Estonia, in the southern part of Lahemaa National Park in Northern Kõrvemaa. This area has been a traditional nesting site where eagles have nested on various bog islands or the bog edge since 2016. In recent years, fledglings have been equipped with transmitters to monitor their migration and wintering. The 2023 fledgling flew to Latvia in early November and returned to Estonia in early December, spending the winter here. Some young birds migrate to Poland or other regions for the winter.

Cycling tours

Hiking trip in search of Kõrvemaa's hidden treasures.

If you come to hike alone, you can get maps from Ohepalu. By preparing more carefully, you can plan the route in advance and even order signs for intersections. This makes it convenient to move with a larger group. Cycling allows you to see distant forgotten and abandoned villages, known and unknown manors, and discover the ridges and small lakes of Kõrvemaa that cars cannot reach.

The forgotten villages have been living their own lives since manor times, when even the lords of the manor did not know that some people lived on distant bog islands. Even today, a traveler can reach these places if they know the routes.

Canoeing Trips

Canoe expedition to discover pristine nature.

Canoeing is certainly the most relaxing of summer trips and the best way to achieve the goals of an active holiday. Canoeing is very well suited for both preschool children and seniors enjoying their retirement. The most popular trip groups are families, colleagues, classmates, or groups of friends. We also organize romantic canoe trips for couples. Participating in a trip does not require good physical fitness or special courage or skill. On the contrary! During a 4-5 hour trip, people have discovered new skills, achieved a new sense of balance, and learned to respect the mystical power of flowing water. It is on a water trip that you realize that a colleague who has worked behind a desk for years has completely new and interesting skills. It is common for couples who have lived together for a long time to argue and reconcile several times during the hours-long trip, and at the end of the trip they say: 'I wouldn't have guessed that...'

The common belief that after a canoe trip the shoulders are sore for a week and the back still feels it the next week is certainly not true. When paddling a canoe at the speed of the river flow with moderate paddle strokes and taking a small break on the shore every hour to an hour and a half to stretch the back, a normally fit hiker will definitely be in good shape even after the trip.

Canoeing allows you to observe Estonia's pristine nature from a completely new and often unexpected perspective. Behind every river bend, a completely new world opens up, inhabited by plants, birds, and animals adapted to that particular place. Moving by canoe, the hiker is directly in the midst of this natural richness. Now it is up to the nature enthusiast to decide whether to capture these unique moments on a smart device or to absorb the scents, breezes, and ever-changing light conditions into their personal memory vault.

For 16 years, we have organized canoe trips mainly on the Valgejõgi River, the most beautiful canoeing river in Northern Estonia. From Ohepalu, you can also start farther away on any canoeable river in Northern Estonia.
A canoe can be rented and taken on a multi-day trip by yourself or you can hire a guide.

Bog Trips

Bog trips Estonia
Ohepalu bog
Experience trip to the Ohepalu bog.

The bog trip starts and ends in the yard of Linnumäe Nature House. The duration of the trip is approximately 3 hours. The trip is easy and suitable for both small children and the elderly. It is advisable to inform the trip organizer in advance of any mobility issues or other special needs. Together, we will surely find a solution to even initially difficult problems.

Each bog trip is unique because there is no marked path in nature. Under the guidance of an experienced guide, we traverse a natural bog environment. During the trip, we pass through various stages of bog development, from shrub bog to open bog, until we reach the labyrinth of water lilies in the center of the bog, where the destination of the trip – Lake Suurjärv – begins to appear. The climax of the experience trip at the shores of Lake Ohepalu Suurjärv is usually a significant experience for all hikers, young and old, men and women alike. Now is the time to sit down and enjoy the silence, letting the mystical sounds of the untouched nature fill the mind.

Before the return journey, we will talk about several local legends and stories related to this unique lake in the bog. We will look for remnants of an ancient village along the trembling shoreline, as according to legends, the ancient village of Vaiküla, built on stilts, was located on this vast lake in the middle of the untouched bog, where the inhabitants of ancient Ohepalu sought refuge when enemy forces approached.

On the way back, there is an excellent opportunity to swim in the bog pool. The antiseptic, bacteria-free dark brown bog water is extremely beneficial for the skin, and older people say it can even heal various skin diseases. A mystical swim in the bog pool is an unforgettable experience both in early summer and late autumn, not to mention the soothing touch of the sun-warmed water in midsummer.
For those seeking special experiences, the best time is an early morning experience trip between the untouched bog pools, where you can catch the first rays of the rising sun through the sparkling spider webs covered with dew drops.

The bog landscape is unique and interesting in all seasons. In spring and autumn, a rare and noisy bird market is held on the largest lake in Western Estonia, the 67-hectare Lake Ohepalu Suurjärv, as tens of thousands of migratory birds stop at the lake. Ornithology enthusiasts are traditionally delighted to see thousands of birds landing on Lake Suurjärv every evening. This bird spectacle lasts only a few weeks and ends as unexpectedly as it began, giving way to the summer silence of the bog landscape. Only a few overflying eagles, nesting in the neighboring bog, disturb the primordial silence of the bog.
The bog is interesting in all seasons. An experience is guaranteed.

The price for a bog trip for 10 people is €99. Each additional person costs €8. The maximum group size is 20 people. The price includes the services of a knowledgeable guide, hot drinks (tea, coffee) at the end of the trip, and the use of gaiters (bahiis) provided by the service provider.

Additionally, you can order:

  • Sauna at Linnumäe Nature House €150/sauna session without time limit
  • Large 8-person hot tub, heating session €170
  • Restaurant meal at Linnumäe Nature House €8.6/person
  • Experience accommodation in the electricity-free Linnumäe Nature House €26/person
  • Accommodation with amenities at Õnnela Guesthouse €20/person
  • Restaurant meal made from local ingredients to take on the trip (picnic basket) €8.5/person

Skiing Trips

Cross-country skiing in Rutka's nature.

Skiers will find a good traditional trail on Rutka Hill. With touring skis, you can of course make your own traditional trail anywhere there is beautiful nature and soft snow.

The Tapa-Pikasaare (including the Rutka Hills, Pikkmägi) esker sequence begins near the town of Tapa from the Valgejõgi valley, extending northwest to the Pikasaare bog. It forms a chain of eskers, making it difficult to distinguish individual landforms as the eskers are closely connected to each other. The peaks of the eskers rise 15-18 meters above the plain, and the highest esker ridge reaches 109.5 meters above sea level near Lake Ohepalu.

Torchlit Hikes

Night hike with torches.

In winter, the nights are long and the days are short. You don't always arrive while it's still light. But this doesn't stop torchlight hikers — it makes it even more exciting.

When you arrive at the edge of the bog with torches, a mystical feeling arises — the forest and clearings look completely different.

Food was once left for the forest brothers on the shore of Kaanjärv. Night hikers may notice that food is still left there today.
